BOGNOR REGIS U3A WALKING GROUP

The walking group meets on the 1st Monday and 3rd Wednesday of every month for morning walks starting at 10am and finishing at approximately 1pm.  All walks are led and organised by members on a voluntary basis and undertaken within an approximate 30minute drive of Bognor Regis. The walks, which on average are 5-6 miles in distance are often governed by terrain such as stiles and hills but paced for enjoyment whilst taking in views and spotting wildlife. We have several keen ornithologists in the group keeping us informed of bird sightings. We are not speed and distance merchants.  On route we also stop for a short coffee/banana break.

Being close to the South Downs National Park and coast we have a variety of walks varying from coastal to countryside which at times can be undulating but often with wonderful elevated views of the coast with the IoW, Portsmouth and Chichester Harbour in the west, through to Littlehampton and further in the east.

Currently the group have just under 50 members with an average walking group of 16. We operate by volunteers offering to organise a walk on a certain date which having been recced details are then sent to myself 2-3 weeks before for communicating to all members by email. Communications contain the walk and direction detail to the meeting point plus OS map number and grid references.

Here are the details for the walking group's next walk on Wednesday 19th February 2020

led by Eric Janering around West Wittering. It is the walk that was planned for

January but cancelled due to inclement weather, so fingers crossed this time.

WALK DETAIL

This is a walk giving wide horizon views to the eastern end of the IoW, Hayling Island and

the South Downs. We head west along the beach and out around East Head then follow

the coastal path into West Wittering via Ellanore Lane. Returning back along the beach from the East.

This is a level walk with no stiles and suitable for dogs but might be muddy in several spots.

Distance is approx. 5m. Map #120 or OL #8 GR772978 refers. Start walking at 10am.

DIRECTIONS

From Chichester follow the A286 going south to Birdham taking 2nd exit at the roundabout

onto the B2179 to West Wittering then fork right down the private road to the beach car park.

There is a charge for parking which tends to fluctuate depending on the day, month and weather but

usually between £1 & £3. Please have loose change ready to pay as sometimes the barrier is not maned.

The car park has good toilets and a new café which I am told is finished and open.

Try and park just inside the barrier on the tarmac otherwise on the grass near the café and meet

by the café and toilets. Additional toilets are also just inside the barrier.
