The Bognor Regis short
tennis group was started in 2013 holding the first session
at the Arun Leisure Centre on Valentine’s Day - despite
the date, 10 people came along to see what it was all
about.
Initially, racquets were borrowed from the Centre but as
confidence and enthusiasm for the game grew, racquets were
bought and Thursday night became a weekly date. In
the first year more than 50 people had tried out this
‘new’ game and 15 or so had become regulars.
What is short tennis? The game is played with a 19”
long tennis racquet using a soft foam ball on a badminton
court but with the net at tennis court height.
Points are scored when the opponent puts the ball in
the net or out of the court and the first to 15 is the
winner. We usually play doubles; the more strenuous
singles game uses the narrower court, excluding the
‘tramlines’. Service is either underarm or overhead,
with each player in turn having 5 serves from alternate
sides.
During the first few weeks of learning the game and
understanding the bounce of the ball, play was gentle but
in no time at all, really good rallies and a variety of
shots were soon the order of the day and so it has
continued.
I have lost count of the number of people who have had a
least one session in the last eight years but pleased to
say, two of the initial 11 are still playing!
